Why Choose Virtual Group Therapy?

Therapy is often imagined as one-on-one work. But group therapy can be just as transformative, and in many cases, even more powerful. In our virtual therapy groups, you’ll join others with similar lived experiences in a safe, affirming space guided by a licensed clinician.

The Benefits of Online Group Therapy

  • Community and Belonging: Many of our clients share that group therapy was the first time they felt truly seen and understood. Group members often become an integral piece of one another’s support system, offering feedback, validation, support, and accountability.
  • Learning From Others: While individual therapy is deeply personal, group therapy allows you to hear how others cope, thrive, and grow – expanding your own toolkit. It is an opportunity to receive direct feedback to a problem you might be experiencing. It is an opportunity to hear how others might be managing executive functioning differences, setting boundaries with family or colleagues, or leaning into their special interests without shame.
  • Accessibility Across NC, VA, and PsyPact States: Because our groups are fully online, you can join from anywhere in North Carolina. Depending on the therapist leading group, group might also be available to clients in Virginia, and 42+ other states that participate in PsyPact.
  • Affirming Spaces: Our groups are LGBTQIA+ affirming, neurodivergent-affirming, trauma-informed, and inclusive. We use identity-first language and intentionally create safer spaces for marginalized communities.
  • Affordability: Group sessions cost less than individual therapy, making them a more accessible way to receive consistent support. All of our groups have a limited number of sliding scale spots available as well, further increasing accessibility for group therapy clients.
  • Flexibility: Online groups mean no long commutes, waiting rooms, or missed sessions because of location. Just log in from a private space with your device and internet connection. Bring your tea, weighted blanket, or even your cat!

Group therapy is also supported by decades of research. Studies consistently show that virtual therapy groups can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, improve coping, and increase resilience.

What is an Open or Ongoing Online Therapy Group?

An “open” or ongoing therapy group is one that is longer in duration and has an “open” membership style, meaning new group members may join throughout one’s participation in the group. Typically, these therapy groups are more “process” based, meaning that individuals bring to the group what they are seeking support around and gather feedback from other group members and, at times, the facilitator.

Likewise, process groups may explore emotions, thoughts, or dynamics that may come up within the group. For example, when a new group member joins, or when a group member decides it is their time to leave, the “process,” or the shift in the group dynamic or membership, may be explored.

Open and ongoing groups are an excellent opportunity for people who crave a deeper level of exploration, seeking ongoing connection and community, or simply desire a more regular and intimate space to discuss life’s challenges or celebrate big moments in a consistent group of their peers.

Open groups are capped at 8-10 participants. Participants commit to a minimum of 6 group sessions and are asked to let the group leader know a week in advance of their intention to discontinue the group. This allows for potential new members from a waitlist to be offered the opportunity to join and begin their group experience!

More information on the structure and benefits of open/ongoing groups is forthcoming on our blog page! In the meantime, check out this blog post that further discusses different kinds of online therapy groups, as well as some differences in online group therapy versus in person group therapy!

Examples of Open or Ongoing Groups at Be BOLD include:

  • Adult Queer+ Group
  • Age 40+ Autistic Women’s Group
  • General Mental Health Interpersonal Process Group

What is a Closed or Time-Limited Online Therapy Group?

A “closed” or “time-limited” online therapy group is a format of group therapy where there is typically a more specific overarching topic that is the focus of the group. This format of online group therapy may include a mixture of the group facilitator offering psychoeducation, teaching and discussing relevant coping skills, and facilitating interpersonal process moments to more deeply explore thoughts and emotions that may arise.

Typically, there is a supportive component to these groups where members are encouraged to discuss, process, and share challenges and wins they have experienced as well as seek feedback and support from group members. These groups usually last from 6 to 10 weeks and new members are no longer able to join following the first or second week. Group members remain in the group for the duration of the group.

Examples of Open or Ongoing Groups at Be BOLD include:

  • Adult ADHD Affirming Group
  • Adult Grief and Loss Group
  • Adult Seasonal Depression Group
  • Teen LGBTQIA+ Group
  • Teen ADHD and Anxiety Group

About Online Group Therapy in North Carolina

Are you having a difficult time handling the struggles in your life?

Do you wish you had more of a sense of community in your life, instead of feeling alone?

Could you use a non-judgmental ear to listen, somebody who really “gets” what you’re going through? Maybe even someone who has been struggling with the same kind of problems?

Do you really need to talk to somebody, but you don’t know who would be willing to listen?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then online group therapy in North Carolina might be an option for you!

Online Group Therapy in North Carolina versus Individual Therapy

Online Group Therapy in NC differs from individual therapy by holding therapeutic sessions in an online group setting run by a therapist in North Carolina, instead of in a one-on-one setting with a therapist. In these group sessions, you might share your thoughts and experiences with the whole group. This allows the group to support one another, and for you to gain a diversity of perspectives from people who understand what you’re going through.

If you’ve been feeling hopeless or alone lately, or struggling with a problem in your life that feels unsurmountable, online group therapy could help you improve your everyday life.

Group therapy helps you find a sense of community with others who are going through similar things as you while giving you access to valuable therapy that can truly help you feel better.

So if any of these sound like you…

  • Worrying about the same problem over and over
  • Wishing you could trust someone with your secret struggle
  • Wanting to stop feeling so alone in what you’re going through
  • Interested in therapy, but want to try something lower pressure than individual therapy
  • Wishing you felt more understood by others
  • “Looking for expert help improving your life
  • You don’t have the time to commit to ongoing individual therapy
  • Wanting a diversity of perspectives from people who “just get it.”

Then online group therapy could be right for you.

Group therapy’s effectiveness lies in its ability to help you find connections with other people and their experiences. These therapist-guided sessions will help you learn more about yourself and how to improve the way you feel while feeling support from others who understand your experience.

If you’re looking for help in improving your everyday life – or for a more community-oriented therapy experience – you would be a great fit for our group therapy services.

We LOVE online group therapy at Be BOLD Psychology and Consulting. We facilitated over 35 adolescent and adult virtual therapy groups over the last five years, and hope to do the same for the next five years!

Although all of our groups are explicitly affirming of and inclusive to queer, transgender, and gender-diverse clients, we also have online therapy groups exclusively for queer, transgender, and gender-diverse folks.

How do I get started with Online Group Therapy in North Carolina?

Are you wanting to join one of the online therapy groups at be BOLD? Send us an email at referrals@beboldpsychnc.com or contact us!

If we are currently registering, we will get you scheduled for a brief group therapy intake with the group leader. If we do not have a group that currently fits your needs, we will add you to our interest list and reach out when we are scheduling online group therapy intakes for the group you are interested in!

What is an Online Group Therapy Intake

Before joining one of our virtual therapy groups, new members complete a 20–30 minute intake session with the group facilitator. This step is important because it allows both you and the clinician to decide whether the group is the right fit for your needs, goals, and current stage of healing.

During your intake appointment, you can expect to:

  • Share your goals and concerns – what you’re hoping to get out of group therapy
  • Learn about group structure and expectations – including meeting times, confidentiality agreements, payment agreements and attendance expectations, and group norms
  • Ask questions about the group process, fees, and what participation looks like
  • Explore fit – ensuring the group’s focus, pace, and style are supportive for you

An intake is not a test you need to “pass.” Instead, it’s a collaborative conversation to make sure you feel comfortable and prepared to enter the group space.

Most intakes are held virtually, just like the group sessions themselves, so you can complete everything from the privacy of your own home.

At Be BOLD Psychology and Consulting, intakes typically range from $100–$175 depending on the group. Sliding scale spots are available, and payment options are discussed openly during intake.

By the end of the intake, you’ll have clarity on what to expect and confidence that the group is a good fit for your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Group Therapy

Do I have to share in group therapy?

No one is ever forced to share. Many people join group therapy feeling nervous about speaking up. It’s okay to start by listening and gradually open up as you feel more comfortable. Our group facilitators create a safe and affirming environment where participation is encouraged, but you can always go at your own pace.

What if I’m nervous about joining a virtual therapy group?

Feeling nervous is normal. Most people experience some anxiety before their first group session. Our clinicians are skilled at helping new members feel welcomed and supported. Remember, every member was once new to the group, and part of the magic of group therapy is discovering that you’re not alone in your experiences.

What if I miss a session?

We understand that life happens. While we encourage consistent attendance to support group cohesion, missing an occasional session is okay. We ask members to let their facilitator know in advance when possible.

How many people are usually in a group?

Most of our virtual therapy groups have 6–10 members, which is large enough to provide a variety of perspectives, suggestions, and feedback, but small enough to feel intimate and safe.

Do I need a diagnosis to join a group?

No. Many of our groups—such as our ADHD-affirming and Autistic-affirming groups—welcome individuals who are self-diagnosed, exploring their identity, or simply curious about their neurotype. Group therapy is about support and connection.

Is online group therapy as effective as in-person groups?

Yes. Research shows that virtual group therapy can be just as effective as in-person groups for building skills, reducing isolation, and improving mental health. Many people find online therapy groups even more accessible and comfortable since they can join from home.

Who can join your online therapy groups?

  • Adults across North Carolina, Virginia, and 42+ PsyPact states (depending on the group leader and their licensure)
  • Teens in North Carolina (and select PsyPact states depending on the group)
  • Clients looking for LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy, neurodivergent-affirming therapy, or grief, loss, and seasonal support

How do I know if group therapy is right for me?

Group therapy is a great fit if you:

  • Crave connection and community
  • Want to learn coping skills in a supportive environment
  • Feel isolated or misunderstood
  • Are navigating life transitions, identity exploration, or loss
  • Would benefit from hearing how others cope with similar challenges

If you’re unsure, self-schedule a free 20-minute consult with a member of our clinical team – we’ll help you decide if a group, individual therapy, or another service is the best fit.
