FAQs

Getting Started

Do I really need therapy?

Many people wonder whether what they are experiencing is “bad enough” for therapy. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from working with a therapist.

Therapy can help if you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, burned out, disconnected, grieving, navigating a life transition, questioning your identity, processing trauma, managing ADHD or Autistic burnout, improving relationships, or simply wanting a space dedicated to your own growth.

Whether you have been considering therapy for years or are reaching out for the first time, our team is here to meet you where you are.

I’ve never been to therapy before. What should I expect?

Starting therapy can feel vulnerable, especially if you’ve never spoken with a therapist before.

Your first session is primarily about getting to know you. We’ll discuss what brings you in, your goals, your history, and what you hope life looks like moving forward. There is no pressure to share everything immediately. Therapy happens at your pace.

Our goal is to create a space where you feel respected, understood, and supported.

Does going to therapy mean I’m weak?

Absolutely not.

Seeking therapy is often one of the strongest things a person can do. It takes courage to ask for support, especially in a culture that often encourages people to push through stress alone.

Many of our clients are highly capable professionals, parents, students, healthcare workers, educators, and helping professionals who simply recognize they don’t have to carry everything by themselves.

Finding the Right Therapist

How do I know which therapist is right for me?

Finding a therapist can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to figure it out alone!

Our administrative team will help match you with a clinician based on your goals, preferences, identities, scheduling needs, and therapeutic interests. Email our Clinical Administrative Lead at referrals@beboldpsychnc.com, or self-schedule with them here!

You can also schedule a free 20-minute consultation with any clinician of your choice by clicking here to determine whether a clinician feels like a good fit. If you’d like to schedule with more than one clinician, email our Clinical Administrative Lead at the email above!

Do I have to identify as LGBTQIA+ or neurodivergent to work with Be BOLD?

Not at all! While we specialize in LGBTQIA+-celebratory and neurodivergent-affirming care, we are glad to support clients of all identities, backgrounds, neurotypes, and lived experiences.

Our clinicians are committed to providing inclusive, culturally responsive, trauma-informed care for everyone.

Therapy Process

How often should I come to therapy?

Most clients begin with weekly sessions to build momentum and establish a strong therapeutic relationship. As your goals evolve, appointments may transition to every other week or less frequently. Together we’ll decide what schedule best supports your needs.

How long will I be in therapy?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Some clients seek therapy for a specific life transition over several months, while others appreciate longer-term support as they continue growing and navigating life’s changes. We’ll regularly revisit your goals and adjust treatment accordingly.

Is everything I share confidential?

Yes. Your privacy is extremely important. Therapy is confidential except in limited situations required by law, such as concerns involving imminent safety, abuse or neglect reporting requirements, or certain court orders. Your therapist will review these exceptions during your first appointment.

What if I cry during therapy?

You’re in good company. Many people cry in therapy. Others laugh, sit quietly, process internally, stim, doodle, pace, or simply think out loud. There is no “right way” to participate in therapy.

Fees & Payment

How much does therapy cost?

Session fees vary depending on the clinician and service provided.

Current therapy, evaluation, and consultation fees are available on our Rates and Insurance page. If you have questions about pricing, our administrative team is happy to help.

Do you accept insurance?

Be BOLD Psychology and Consulting is a private pay practice. Being out-of-network allows our clinicians greater flexibility in treatment planning, privacy, and individualized care without many of the restrictions imposed by insurance companies. If you’d like to use your insurance for reimbursement, many health plans cover out-of-network services in part or full. We can provide a helpful step-by-step guide for navigating your insurance – just reach out!

Can I use my out-of-network benefits?

Many clients receive reimbursement through their out-of-network insurance benefits. Coverage varies by plan.

Upon request, we can provide a superbill that you may submit directly to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Superbills are offered for individual and group therapy sessions, as well as the initial intake for psychological testing. We do not offer superbills for couples, relationship, or family therapy. We do not offer superbills for our evaluation services, and forensic and court-ordered services are never covered by insurance, even with an in-network provider.

Do you offer free consultations?

Yes.

Many of our clinicians offer a complimentary 20-minute consultation to help determine whether they are a good fit for your needs before scheduling your first appointment. You can schedule a free 20-minute consultation with any clinician of your choice by clicking here to determine whether a clinician feels like a good fit. If you’d like to schedule with more than one clinician, email our Clinical Administrative Lead at referrals@beboldpsychnc.com

Psychological and Psychoeducational Evaluations

What types of psychological evaluations do you provide?

Our doctoral-level clinicians provide comprehensive neuroaffirming psychological evaluations for kids, adolescents, and adults, including diagnostic clarification, ADHD evaluations, Autism evaluations, Learning Disorder evaluations, IQ Testing, personality assessment, and other psychological testing services.

Recommendations are individualized and designed to support treatment planning, selfunderstanding, and accommodations when appropriate.

Can psychological evaluations be completed virtually?

Many adult psychological evaluations can be completed virtually for clients located in North Carolina, while certain assessment components may require a brief in-person appointment in our Durham, North Carolina office, depending on the specific testing measures being used.

Psychoeducational evaluations and most evaluations for kids ages 6-17 will require an in-office testing appointment to administer cognitive, intelligence, and achievement measures to better assess for learning differences, working memory, processing speed, and other helpful executive functioning information!

Neurodivergent & LGBTQIA+ Affirming Care

What does neurodivergent-affirming therapy mean?

Neurodivergent-affirming therapy recognizes Autism, ADHD, and other neurotypes as natural forms of human and brain diversity rather than problems to be fixed.

Our clinicians work collaboratively with clients to understand strengths, reduce shame, address trauma, and develop supports that align with how their brains naturally function.

What does LGBTQIA+-celebratory therapy mean?

LGBTQIA+ celebratory therapy respects and celebrates each person’s identity.

Our clinicians strive to create spaces where LGBTQIA+ clients can explore relationships, identity, mental health, family dynamics, transition-related experiences, and everyday life without needing to educate their therapist. Many of our clinicians have lived experiences and shared identities, while others are strongly allied.
