Starting therapy is a brave step, and it’s common to have questions about the process. At Be BOLD Psychology and Consulting, based in North Carolina, we’re here to support you every step of the way. Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions, along with insights into what you can expect as you begin your therapeutic journey.

  1. Is going to therapy a sign of weakness?

Not at all! Seeking therapy is a sign of strength and self awareness. It takes courage to recognize when you need support and to take proactive steps toward improving your mental health. Everyone faces challenges, and reaching out for help when you need it shows resilience and self-awareness.

At Be BOLD, we’ll explore your strengths and use them to help you learn new skills you can use to overcome the difficulties you’re facing, empowering you to navigate life’s hurdles confidently.

  1. I’ve never talked to anyone about my struggles. I usually handle things on my own. Is it normal to feel nervous about opening up?

It’s completely normal to feel nervous, especially if this is your first time talking to someone about personal matters. Therapy is strange–Literally! We meet a stranger and tell them our deepest feelings and most protected thoughts. Many people start therapy feeling unsure or hesitant, but with the right clinical match, therapy is a safe, confidential space where you can express yourself without judgment.

At Be BOLD, we don’t need to share everything right away, and we can go at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Over time, you’ll likely find that the more you talk and explore your feelings, the more empowered you feel to face your challenges.

  1. What’s the difference between talking to a therapist and confiding in a friend or family member?

While friends and family can be great listeners, therapists bring specialized training to the table. At Be BOLD, our therapists offer professional, unbiased support, helping you address underlying patterns, develop coping strategies, and work toward your personal goals. We provide a confidential space where you can be your authentic self without fear of judgment or emotional entanglement.

Therapy is also a private, confidential space, which means you don’t have to worry about your personal matters being shared outside of the room. Unlike friends or family, who may have their own perspectives or emotional involvement, a therapist provides an unbiased, professional viewpoint that focuses solely on your well-being. Additionally, a therapist can offer tools and strategies to help you manage emotions, navigate tough situations, and foster your own growth.

  1. Why not just take medication instead of going to therapy?

Medication can be an important tool for managing symptoms like anxiety or depression, but it often works best alongside therapy. Medication doesn’t address all the emotional and psychological factors that contribute to your struggles. Therapy helps you understand the root causes of your challenges, process difficult emotions, and develop long-term skills for coping and personal growth. In many cases, therapy and medication can work well together, with therapy providing the tools to manage symptoms and medication addressing biological or chemical imbalances. Medication alone is not meant to heal; it is part of a comprehensive path towards healing.

  1. How does therapy work? What do sessions look like?

Therapy sessions at Be BOLD are tailored to your needs and goals. In the beginning, we’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, your challenges, and what you hope to achieve. From there, we’ll develop a plan together to help you move forward toward your personal goals. Therapy often involves talking about your feelings and experiences, learning new coping skills, and exploring different perspectives. It may also involve exercises, journaling, or reflection between sessions. You don’t need to have all the answers or know exactly what to say—your role is to be open and willing to explore your thoughts and feelings, and we will be here to guide you through the process. You set the pace, and we provide the guidance.

  1. How long will therapy take?

The length of therapy varies from person to person. It depends on many factors, including your goals, the items you want to address, and your personal readiness for change. Some people may feel better after just a few sessions, while others may need more time to work through deeper or more complex challenges. Alternatively, some folks may choose to engage in long term depth work that involves an ongoing curiosity and understanding of patterns, responses, and behaviors that influence and shape their life choices.

At Be BOLD, we’ll regularly check in about your progress and adjust our approach as needed. Ultimately, therapy is about finding lasting solutions, self-awareness, and we’ll work together to determine what feels right for you.

  1. I want to get the most out of therapy. How can I help make that happen?

Your active involvement is key to making the most of therapy. Being open and honest with your clinician about your thoughts, feelings, and progress will help us create an approach that works best for you. If there’s something on your mind, bring it up in session.

If a particular technique or approach isn’t working for you, let your clinician know—they’ll adjust.

Consistency is also important, so attending sessions regularly and doing any suggested exercises or reflections between sessions can help you build momentum and continue to make progress. The more engaged and committed you are, the more you’ll get out of the experience.

  1. Will therapy be culturally sensitive to my identities, background and experiences?

Yes, absolutely. We recognize that everyone’s life experiences are shaped by their culture, identity, neurotype, and background. Our work together will be respectful of your unique perspective, and your clinician will create an environment where you feel seen, heard, and valued for who you are.

Therapy is a collaborative process, and we will address issues that are relevant to your personal identities and cultural context. I’m here to support you in a way that respects your identity and helps you feel empowered in your journey.

  1. Is therapy confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is a fundamental part of therapy. Everything you share in our sessions remains private, with a few exceptions related to safety, court-involvement, or as mandated by law. For example, if there is a concern of harm to yourself or others, there may be a need to share information in order to provide support and protection. There may be other situations, as well, where information is shared regarding imminent or ongoing abuse to a child or vulnerable adult that requires us to break confidentiality to keep everyone safe. Lastly, if we are court-ordered to do something, we must comply. Otherwise, you can feel confident that your conversations in therapy are safe and secure.
