Adolescence is often a time of exploration, self-discovery, and change. For teens exploring fluid or nonbinary identities, this period can bring both excitement and uncertainty. Some teens may feel joyful and excited about experimenting with gender expression, while others may struggle with stigma, confusion, or fear of rejection. Parents may also feel unsure about how best to support their child during this journey.
The good news? Teen therapy in North Carolina with an affirming provider can create a safe and validating space for teens and their families to navigate these questions together. At Be BOLD Psychology and Consulting, we specialize in LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy in NC and proudly support teens who are exploring their identities. We offer telehealth options for LGBTQIA+ teens in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and the 42+ PSYPACT states. We also offer LGBTQIA+ teen therapy at our office in Durham, North Carolina!
Why Therapy Matters for Gender-Expansive Teens
The teenage years are already full of transitions. For those exploring fluid identities or identifying as nonbinary, there may be additional layers of complexity:
- Misgendering at school or home – Hearing the wrong pronouns repeatedly can be exhausting and painful. Having support and spaces where pronouns are used correctly can be helpfu, protective, and healing
- Bullying and discrimination – Studies show that LGBTQIA+ teens are more likely to experience bullying, which can increase stress, anxiety, and depression. Having a therapeutic space to share these experiences and receive support can make a huge difference.
- Family conflict or misunderstanding – Parents may not always know how to respond, even when they want to be supportive. Therapy for LGBTQIA+ teens can help both the teen and their family members. A therapist can assist with or empower a teen to share their feelings, and make requests. Likewise, if appropriate, an LGBTQIA+ affirming teen therapist can meet with family members to answer questions, provide psychoeducation, and provide feedback on how to best support their nonbinary teen.
- Navigating gender dysphoria – Some teens experience distress related to their body or how others perceive them. A therapist who specializes in supporting trans and nonbinary teens can assist the teen with resources, identity exploration, and other ideas to help to lessen experiences of gender dysphoria, as well as explore ways to increase gender euphoria.
With the help of a gender-affirming therapist in North Carolina, teens can process their feelings, learn coping strategies, and celebrate their authentic selves .
What Does Gender-Affirming Therapy Look Like?
Therapy for trans nonbinary teens is not about changing who a teen is. It’s about supporting them in becoming more fully themselves. Sessions may include:
- Exploring identity in a safe space – Teens can try out names, pronouns, and gender expression without fear of judgment. This might include games, art, or other kinds of creative expression in session.
- Processing dysphoria and celebrating euphoria – Therapy makes space for both the hard parts and the joy of being affirmed. Exploring gender euphoria, and creating ways to increase instances of gender euphoria, is equally as powerful as exploring and addressing causes of gender dysphoria.
- Building resilience skills – From stress management to boundary setting, LGBTQIA+ therapy in NC can give teens practical tools for handling real-world challenges. This may include distress tolerance skills, somatic processing, mindfulness, or learning and practicing assertive communication.
- Family collaboration – Parents may be invited into sessions to improve communication and support, if it will benefit and be supportive of the teen therapy client. At times, a therapist may meet with parents and family members separately to offer additional space for questions, feedback, and psychoeducation to further support the teen therapy client.
- Connecting with affirming resources – A queer-affirming therapist in North Carolina can link teens to safe communities, both online and in-person. Check out Be BOLD’s trans and gender-diverse resource page here!
What Teens Gain from LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy
Working with a gender-affirming therapist in North Carolina helps teens:
- Improve mental health and reduce anxiety, depression, and stress
- Build confidence in their identity
- Strengthen relationships with peers and family
- Develop lifelong coping strategies for resilience
The Unique Joys and Challenges of Fluid Identities
Fluid and nonbinary identities don’t always fit neatly into boxes. A teen might feel more masculine one day, more feminine the next, or outside of the binary altogether. This flexibility is valid and beautiful, but it can also be misunderstood. Nonbinary folks are frequently misgendered, and oftentimes have their identities invalidated. This is not okay.
Therapy for trans and nonbinary teens helps teens explore without pressure. There is no need to “pick” an identity, and certainly not a binary one. Teens are invited to explore what feels best for them. It also gives them language to describe themselves if they want, or reassurance that they don’t have to use a label at all.
How Parents Can Support Their Trans or Nonbinary Teen
Parental support is one of the most powerful protective factors for a nonbinary teen’s mental health. Parents can:
- Listen without judgment – Create open conversations. Ask open-ended questions, such as “what pronouns feel best for you today” or “what kind of clothing, or clothing item, makes you feel your happiest today?”
- Practice affirming language – Use the name and pronoun(s) your teen is using for themselves. If teens are exploring different names or pronouns, do a check in. Simply ask, “ Is ____ still the name you feel most comfortable using, or are you using something else?” You can do the same with pronouns.
- Learn together – Read, watch, and explore resources by LGBTQIA+ voices. Jonathan Van Ness, Jeffrey Marsh, and Alok Vaid-Menon are some great nonbinary activists, speakers, and authors to consider.
- Advocate – Speak up in schools, healthcare, and community spaces. Advocate for the correct use of pronouns and gender-inclusive bathrooms.
- Seek support – Parents may benefit from therapy or support groups in North Carolina as they learn to better show up for their child. Transforming Families is a potential research, as are numerous PFLAG chapters in North Carolina.
