Celebrating Queer Joy: 5 Mental Health Practices to Help LGBTQIA+ Folks Thrive

queer joy

Pride Month is more than a rainbow-colored celebration—it’s a powerful reminder of what makes LGBTQIA+ life beautiful, bold, and resilient. At Be BOLD Psychology and Consulting, we honor this month by spotlighting the strength, creativity, and connection that thrive in queer communities, especially here in North Carolina. It’s an opportunity to embrace what truly matters – celebrating individuality and fostering a supportive environment for mental health growth. For the queer community, Pride Month represents more than just a celebration. It reminds us of the power of community, protest, and the beauty in diversity and the strength in being authentic.
Understanding the importance of affirming and trauma-informed mental health care, we aim to shift the focus from ongoing challenges to the joy and resilience that often go overlooked. This shift is necessary to provide a space where queer individuals can grow and feel grounded. Through connection, creativity, and mindfulness, we can explore ways to feel more present and more connected to ourselves, one step at a time.

Understanding Queer Joy and Resilience

Queer joy is the spark you feel when you’re fully seen, accepted, and celebrated in your identity. For many, it shows up in small moments—laughing with a supportive friend, dancing at a Pride event, or wearing what feels right. Queer joy doesn’t mean ignoring real challenges. It means honoring moments of light in a world that oftentimes feels unsafe or makes us feel unwelcome to be exactly who we are.

Resilience often grows from these moments of joy. When queer people are affirmed, connected, and supported, they begin building a foundation that helps them bounce back in tough times. This kind of strength isn’t about staying positive no matter what. It’s about returning to what makes you feel whole. Sometimes, it starts with finding simple sources of joy and expanding from there.

Building Resilience Through LGBTQIA+ Community

Finding people who understand your experiences can make a big difference. Whether you’re new to connecting with the LGBTQIA+ community or looking to deepen your ties, community support can strengthen your sense of identity and help reduce feelings of isolation.

Here are a few ways you can connect with others:

  • Visit a local LGBTQIA+ center or group in North Carolina for events and peer support. There are LGBTQIA+ centers in Raleigh, Durham, Winston-Salem, Asheville, and Charlotte, to name a few.
  • Attend Pride events during June and keep showing up for events year-round. Don’t forget Raleigh Pride – the largest pride event in NC, is in June!
  • Join LGBTQIA+ book clubs, art collectives, or special interest groups that align with your hobbies.

However, we recognize that not everyone has access to local groups or events. Virtual communities can offer space for meaningful connections as well. Online platforms like forums and group chats help people find support, friendship, and solidarity—especially if you live in parts of North Carolina without easy access to in-person meetups. Whether in person or online, spaces like these can help you feel less alone and offer the kind of support systems that help joy and resilience flourish.

You might also consider joining a therapist-led virtual therapy group. For example, Be BOLD Psychology and Consulting’s Adult Queer+ group is continuing on June 26. There are six members returning, with two open spots for new clients to join. If interested, please email drbate@beboldpsychnc.com.

Our therapy group for queer, trans, and nonbinary adults is virtual and open to clients in any of the 42 PSYPACT states. It will meet on Thursdays from 5-6 PM EST. Groups will be virtual, open to clients in any of the 42 PSYPACT states as well, on Thursdays from 5-6 PM. Reclaim Identity Through Creative Expression

Creativity is a powerful way to express yourself when words aren’t enough. For LGBTQIA+ individuals, art, writing, and other creative outlets can be where identity takes shape. These practices allow you to explore who you are and what matters to you—and just as importantly, they let you claim space for joy.

Try exploring the following creative ideas:

  • Start a photo journal that reflects emotions, experiences, and values.
  • Write poetry, short stories, or personal essays about your identity and growth.
  • Make a playlist that captures your journey and share it with others who might relate.
  • Create something visual like a collage, painting, or digital art piece that speaks to your sense of self.

Whether you’re just starting or have been expressing yourself this way for years, creative work doesn’t need to be “perfect.” What matters most is how you feel engaging with it. The process of making something authentic to you can strengthen confidence and give you the space to heal and grow.

Queer-Centered Mindfulness Practices

Mindfulness is about being present without judgment. It offers a grounding tool for calming the noise around you and listening more closely to yourself. For queer individuals, mindfulness can help support emotional regulation, identity development, and connection to strength within.

Try incorporating these mindfulness practices:

1. Simple Breathing Exercises: Take a few minutes to focus only on your breath. Inhale slowly, hold for three or four seconds, and exhale slowly. Repeat for five minutes. This can calm both body and mind.

2. Mindful Journaling: Set time aside to write without censoring yourself. Describe how you’re feeling, what’s been going on, or anything you’ve noticed about yourself. Writing with honesty builds self-awareness and helps you notice patterns over time.

3. Gratitude Reflection: Write down one, two, or three things you’re grateful for each day. Focus
on moments that support your queer identity or bring you closer to queer joy. Maybe you are grateful for your favorite queer-owned coffee shop, your awesome neighborhood, or your best friend, for example.

4. Guided Meditations: Use apps or free recordings created by LGBTQIA+ voices. Hearing affirming messages while practicing mindfulness can help you feel more at ease and supported.

These practices don’t have to be long or complex. Consistency matters more than perfection. Let mindfulness grow in your life in ways that feel accessible. It can be a steady guide as you continue embracing who you are.

Embracing Your Journey with Pride

Building queer joy and resilience doesn’t happen all at once. It’s made up of small, meaningful steps – being in community, finding creative outlets, checking in with your emotions, and being proud of who you are. Each act of self-care and connection brings you closer to feeling grounded and affirmed.

The truth is, there is no one way to celebrate your identity. What matters most is showing up for yourself, honoring your feelings, and choosing joy however it looks to you. Whether you’re reflecting quietly through journaling, sharing art that speaks your truth, or building community in-person or online, your journey is valid.

Being your whole self is worth celebrating, this month and every month.
