Have you been feeling unmotivated and struggle to complete tasks? Does overthinking keep you up at night? Have you been wondering more and more “Who am I?” -– grappling with questions like “What do I want?” What do I need?” or “What do I want to do?”
Hey y’all, I’m Dr. Curran. I love working with adolescents and young adults who are struggling with low mood, anxiety, relationships, and finding the best direction for their lives. I also love working with people of all ages who are going through life transitions, identity exploration, who are in the midst of changes, or who are feeling ‘stuck.’
I specialize in acceptance and commitment therapy, purposed with helping people work through difficult adjustments, open their mind to possibilities, and connect to their own sense of purpose by aligning their behavior with their values. When we get in touch with our values and align our behavior with what we really want, we can improve our motivation and energy, finding the ability to flexibly approach life’s challenges. Let’s work together! I want to help you find or rekindle that motivation, and to build healthy habits to help you get out of feeling ‘stuck.’
The past can be a powerful reason why we get trapped in patterns, mindsets, and behaviors. It’s totally normal and natural that our past experiences shape our present and future expectations, relationships, and the way we exist in this world. Often, this can limit our confidence and sense of future opportunity, or get keep us feeling trapped in a cycle (or maybe a relationship, job, school, or even home) that is no longer helpful. Together, we can explore some elements of the past that may be keeping you stuck here in the present. Let’s safely process things that have happened, messages you have received, and traumas you have endured. In safely exploring and fully processing, we can work to address the past, change that hurtful self-talk, cultivate confidence, push out those perfectionistic tendencies, modify attitudes and responses, and open doors to your most authentic, values-driven future!
A little more about who I love to work with:
My goal is to help people feel safe with me in exploring their needs, feelings, behaviors, and emotions, and provide care that centers their experiences in an affirming way. My clinical approach is one that strives for cultural humility, and that seeks to support others with an unassuming respect for their experiences. One of my central beliefs in practice is that an individual is the expert on their own experiences, and that it is a privilege to walk beside them in their healing journey. As such, my work necessitates an ongoing commitment to consuming research, maintaining open-mindedness, and prioritizing attunement to the individual needs of people.
Think we might be a good fit? I’d be delighted to meet with you to find out! Send me an email at DrCurran@beboldpsychnc.com and I am happy to answer any questions or get you scheduled for a free 20-minute consult!
My “big three” therapeutic focus areas include:
LGBTQIAA+ Therapy
My passion lies in providing a safer, inclusive, affirming, and respectful therapeutic space to LGBTQIAA+ community members. It may be that you are seeking to explore and process aspects of your LGBTQIAA+ identity. It may also be that you are seeking an LGBTQIAA+ inclusive and affirming space to process a variety of other experiences, topics, or challenges. It may be both. I am dedicated to helping LGBTQIAA+ community members obtain necessary resources, process their unique and valid experiences, and move toward liberation and empowerment. The world we live in can be a scary and dangerous place for LGBTQIAA+ community members. It is my goal to provide a safe, inclusive, and effective space for members of the LGBTQIAA+ community to find clarity for identity-based concerns, overcome hurdles, and mobilize toward their dreams. Affirmative therapy can make a difference in helping you feel supported, and give you space to discover what it means to be your truest, most authentic, most liberated self.
Interpersonal Therapy
Have you ever struggled to make friends or keep relationships going? Do you have a hard time communicating what you’re going through, or get overwhelmed by heavy emotions when trying to describe your experiences? Do you ever feel drained from social anxiety and avoid social situations as a result? Do you find yourself feeling frustrated with others, or perhaps you experience the feeling of rejection so intensely it is physically painful? Do you struggle with people-pleasing – and maybe it is just really fricken hard to say ‘No” so others? If any of these sound familiar, we have plenty to talk about together. Conversations about attachment style, relationship patterns, and expectations in relationships can help in achieving insight toward making and maintaining satisfying relationships. Further, more deeply exploring our own biological and historical roots in our mind and body might help to explain why we respond to others the way that we do- whether with social anxiety, frustration, people-pleasing behaviors, lashing out, rejection sensitivity, or feeling abandoned. Many humans have an innate need for connection to others. What’s getting in the way of connection for you? Let’s explore!
Trauma Therapy
Do you feel like you’re living in survival mode? Does the phrase, “Surviving, not thriving” hit home just a little too much? Traumatic experiences and traumatic relationships can launch you into this space of survival, which can really impact your ability to fully thrive.
Many physiological and psychological mechanisms are activated when one has survived trauma – big or small. Together in therapy, we will create a safer space to can help to address your body’s trauma responses, explore and calm that feeling of being ‘activated,’ and work through feelings of discomfort, illness, or fatigue that may not have an easily-identifiable cause (heads up – it maybe trauma letting you know something is off balance!). You deserve to live life fully, with a sense of purpose and safety. You don’t have to tough it out and pretend “everything’s fine” in order an attempt to “move on”; in fact, research shows quite the opposite. Sharing your experiences in a safe space, learning coping skills to better manage trauma responses, and learning to soothe yourself and your body make a big difference toward healing. Together, we can work on better managing big emotions, creating your own sense of safety, connecting to others, and making sense of your nervous system responses. Starting trauma therapy takes courage. It involves recognizing that although you are not responsible for the ways you’ve been hurt, you can be empowered towards your own healing and take steps to build yourself up and find peace. And, you don’t have to do it alone! If you think we would be a good fit, I’d be honored to accompany you on your healing journey.
In addition to providing individual therapy services with adolescents and adults and group therapy services, Dr. Curran offers forensic and psychological evaluation services and letters of support for gender-affirming care.
